Dotsy Lamb, history professor and recently divorced empty nester, is ready for culture, culinary delights and sun-drenched piazzas on her group tour of Italy - but murder wasn't part of the package. Snide, cruel Meg Bauer was loathed by everyone, but even an obnoxious tourist deserves justice after being stabbed to death with a souvenir knife purchased by her sister.

When a local gypsy is arrested, Dotsy believes he's an innocent scapegoat. Suspecting that the killer lurks among them, she discovers that within the twenty-odd mix of tourists and guides, there are a few dark secrets, and even more things to hide. When another member of the tour plunges off a balcony to her death, Dotsy unravels a tangle of vengeance, scandal, and lies. Still, the pieces don't quite add up--until she's drawn close enough to the truth to get in the way of a clever and determined killer.

Death of an Obnoxious Tourist A Dotsy Lamb Travel Mystery Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Maria Hudgins Connie Terwilliger Maria B Hudgins Books

This is where I first met Dotsy Lamb, she's a good person to have around when there's a murder plus we get to experience things from her point of view so we solve the mystery right along with her. I have never been to Italy - I don't know if there are inaccuracies as reported but it didn't matter to me, I got an armchair trip to Italy. I enjoyed this book and went on to read several more. Mystery, romance, wonderful destinations and a fitting end to an obnoxious person - I'm a fan.

Death of an Obnoxious Tourist A Dotsy Lamb Travel Mystery Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Maria Hudgins Connie Terwilliger Maria B Hudgins Books Reviews

This book reminded me of several books I read years ago by an author called Dorothy Gilman about an aging detective called Mrs Pollifax. The character in this book, Dotsy Lamb, was fun to read about and her adventures in Italy quite exciting at times. As I have been to Italy I was able to relate to the places she went and described. It was an easy book to read, not too long and, at times, although exciting, also sad. I see there are more of the series and I will be sure to purchase them.
I enjoyed this book - loved the setting, characters were believable as was the mystery. Clues enabled me to solve the mystery but had to pay close attention or would have missed a couple of them. I came across it when looking for travel books so was pleasantly surprised because I have never seen the book elsewhere on (but probably just me missing it for whatever reason). No F bombs or sex scenes that I recall or would have stopped reading it but I read it all the way through. I recommend.
Dotsy Lamb's tour of Italy takes a very nasty turn when one woman in her group is found murdered in her hotel room shortly after the trip begins. For most, she would not be missed. Her barbs, complaints, and down-right meanness had not endeared her to any in the group--especially the sister who shared a room with her. But Dotsy is certain the Carabinieri are on the wrong track as they arrest and then release more than suspect.

Ms. Hudgins provides a delightful who-dun-it with an Italian flare. Having toured some of the places she describes in the book, I truly enjoyed the descriptions and colorful characters she included in her story. A great read!
There enough summaries that I will not go into details of the story.

This was an enjoyable story with good characters. I especially liked when the sidekick Letty said or did something really on point since she is usually too concrete to "get" things. This book has an old fashioned feel but that is okay for me. As in many cozy mysteries, there are a few too many red herrings, but Dotsy sees the potential in the true motive as well as the other possible motives almost from the beginning. I like when the heroine has enough sense to see the obvious from the clues that we see. I will be reading more from this series, it just won't be up with JD Robb.
I found the story overall to be very good. However, having lived in Italy for three years, I found a number of errors in the geography of the book, which seems to indicate to me that the writer has never been to Italy. Why would someone fly into Milan in order to go to Venice, when there's a perfectly good airport in Venice itself? Why would you travel down the Autostrada JUST to visit Verona for several hours? That just doesn't make sense. NO ONE brings a tour group in through Milan if they are visiting Venice, THEN Florence. The commentary on Siena doesn't ring true, either, considering the amount of development done in the last century. Nor does the visit to Pisa ring true, as there are over a hundred towers in Pisa, yet somehow they only saw one...
I really enjoyed this cozy mystery. I liked the main character, Dotsy and her sidekick Letty a lot. The location, Italy is one I am completely unfamiliar with, and I enjoyed reading bits and pieces about it. (even of there were some inaccuracies as another reviewer states.)
The story itself is a gentle mystery, with just a touch of romance thrown in. There were a couple of murders and there was some description of the bodies, but the actual killings are mostly left to the imagination. The book had enough twists and turns to keep me reading. I did not guess who the murderer was before it was revealed in the book, even though there were clues given. (I didn't see those, either, until after the fact!)
I picked up this book during a free promotion, but would not have minded paying for it. I will definitely read more books by this author.
I liked the book, it reminded me a bit of the Mrs. Pollifax series only on a more modern level without the spy aspect.

The characters were amusing, the plot wasn't super predictable, the motive was believable.

I liked the main character, and felt she'd be a fun lady to hang out with (even though I'm just shy of turning 30 and she's in my parent's generation...).

The book wasn't super ultra detailed on some things, so if you like a book that takes 3 paragraphs to describe what each character had for dinner, this might not be your writing style. I did feel like the author had visited the places described, or at least had done a lot of research for the feel and layout of the places. I'm considering putting the rest of the series on my wish list, as I read this book as a free book on my Fire HD 7'' (with no blatant typograhpical or layout errors). I actually enjoyed being able to highight details I thought might be important later so it was easier to play the prediction game as I read (... hmmmm that was a suspicious comment *pauses to highlight* maybe this person actually was the criminal....)
